Goats, Chickens, and Ducks, Oh my!
Sox Family Farm Story
The Sox Family Farm was established in 2021 with the purchase of our new homestead north of Burlington, North Carolina. The name “Sox” is an homage to Andy “Sox” Stocking, Mark’s father.
The saga of farm life began when Mark decided his spirit animal was a goat. Something about being an old goat himself. When a review of the HOA bylaws confirmed they were ridiculously restrictive, regarding cute lovable goats, it was determined the Stocking family would have to move.
After buying some land and realizing the work needed to build our dream, our vision was fulfilled when our great realtor found a property already set up for a family farm. At the first viewing we realized that this was the one. Although it didn’t have any existing goats, the previous owners had them. The pastures were fenced and the shelters were already built. There were already chicken coops and outbuildings. We even managed to be thrown into the animal raising process when we were “gifted” a hen and rooster who refused to leave.
We have even more chickens and have even raised some ducklings. With the acquisition of two bucklings over the Labor Day Weekend, 2022, the Sox Family Farm was now officially a “goat” farm. Later that fall, we rescued a doe and brought the goat count to three.
In 2023 we started to grow some food on the farm. We got some blueberry, fig, and raspberry plants. We started a hydroponic system with some strawberries. In 2024, we added apple and peach trees. To round out the crops, we started cucumber, pumpkin, and watermelons, as well.
